Last Night’s Football game against the Minnesota Vikings, the San Francisco 49ers suffered a tragic loss despite forcing a turnover on the opening drive of the game. Vikings duo Kirk Cousins and Jordon Addison totally outclassed the defense of the 49ers.
Despite making 45 passes, the 49ers’ defense couldn’t sack the Vikings quarterback even once, who recorded 378 yards with two touchdowns on 35 out of 45 passing. The defense struggled largely to the pressure of Cousins, just like how quarterback Brock Purdy struggled with multiple interceptions.
Even if there was some hope for the 49ers to take a lead in the game, it got lost after the two interceptions recorded by Brock Purdy in the fourth quarter. With Purdy’s disastrous performance, ESPN analyst Shannon Sharpe got a backing, as he doesn’t consider Purdy worthy enough to be called an elite quarterback.
When asked if Sharpe had lost confidence in Brock Purdy, the former NFL great said:
Lost confidence? I don't even know what he was, to begin with. I noticed when we had this conversation about three weeks ago and I was trending because I said 'Brock Purdy wasn't elite.' Now all of a sudden, I ain't get nothing. We want the ball in that Elite quarterback's hand, Purdy, and what happened? Two interceptions! They had three interceptions, and they had three turnovers coming into the game.
Shannon Sharpe further commented that when the defense couldn’t be perfect, Kirk Cousins faced challenges. When everything around him wasn’t ideal, the team turned to Brock Purdy, but he didn’t meet the expectations. If Purdy is regarded as elite, it might require a new definition for Patrick Mahomes. Purdy’s performance in the game included 272 passing yards, completing 21 of 30 passes with a touchdown and two significant interceptions.
Brock Purdy’s costly interceptions in the 49ers’ consecutive losses
With an amazing start of zero interceptions in the first five weeks of this season, Purdy ended up with three interceptions in the last two back-to-back losses of the 49ers, against the Cleveland Browns and the Vikings.

During the face-off against the Vikings, Purdy was picked off in the fourth quarter of the back, as he became the first game of his career with multiple interceptions. He knew where he lagged during the game, therefore he took full accountability for his actions as well.
Purdy’s first interception in the game was actually intended for Jennings, with the last five minutes remaining in the game. As Purdy threw the ball directed toward the wide receiver, it landed in the hands of the Viking’s safety Camryn Bynum. In the last closing seconds of the game, Bynum again caught the ball, which was intended for Ray-Ray McCloud, resulting in the final game-sealing interception.
