When Christian McCaffrey first entered the Carolina Panthers locker room back in 2017, he wasn’t just another rookie trying to fit in with other players. No, this wasn’t the All-Pro running back’s first time inside a football team’s backyard. He practically grew up in one.
Christian’s father, Ed McCaffrey, played 13 seasons in the NFL, starring for the likes of the New York Giants, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Denver Broncos. It’s in Boulder Country where the 27-year-old received his first education in football.
And believe it or not, his first mentor, besides his dad, was his Broncos teammate. None other than Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe. It may sound like a Hollywood script for a blockbuster movie, but it’s true. Sharpe himself gave the world proof when he shared a photograph of an adolescent Christian McCaffrey on his lap in the Broncos locker room in 2019.
That picture resurfaced recently after an X user shared it online on Friday. It blew a lot of football fans’ minds to find out that Ed, a three-time Super Bowl winner, is the father of the 49ers rusher. Not only that, but Sharpe was also a key part of his life.
The three-time Pro Bowler later put the rest of the doubt to bed by resharing the tweet. Only close friends and family call the 55-year-old ESPN analyst by his pet name.
Christian McCaffrey recalled his time in Denver
When Ed played his last season for the Broncos in 2003, Christian was just 7 years old. And that picture is possibly from that time. He doesn’t remember much; well, he was a kid after all, but he does recall a lot of the Denver locker room.
McCaffrey, in an interview with Yahoo.com in 2017, said,
Those guys (Sharpe and the Broncos players) treated us, my brother and me, so well. I used to play Power Rangers with Shannon Sharpe, and had competitions with my brothers to see who could go in the ice tubs the longest. I remember that stuff more than I do the actual games.
And after seven seasons in the NFL, the Stanford graduate is on the cusp of being one of the candidates for the NFL MVP. In 16 games this season, he has carried the ball 277 times for 1495 yards and has scored a total of 21 touchdowns (14 rushing and 7 receiving). He will miss the last game of the regular season against the Los Angeles Rams due to a mild calf strain.
