Trey Lance going to the Dallas Cowboys from the San Francisco 49ers has caused a lot of stir in the media. Once regarded as the future of the 49ers franchise is now the backup of Dak Prescott in Dallas, just two years after being drafted third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. The Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones was applauded by Fox Sports analyst Skipp Bayless for making this trade happen.

Jones traded for Lance without consulting his quarterback Prescott. Various analysts are calling it a risky and unnecessary move. Bayless however praised Jones on his show Undisputed, despite Prescott having reservations about the move.

According to Bayless, Lance’s ceiling is higher than Prescott’s. “Trey Lance’s ceiling is higher than Dak. This was a steal of a deal for Jerry and I applaud it.” Bayless said on his show. Lance is yet to prove his worth in the NFL, but if he develops quickly in Dallas, this trade will be looked at as a masterstroke in the future.

Lance won’t start this season for the Cowboys. He will sit behind Dak Prescott and gain valuable experience in Dallas. Prescott though, will be under pressure to perform. He had a rough 2022 season and will hope to bounce back this season. With Lance and Cooper Rush, who won 4 of the 5 game she started last year, waiting in the wings, mistakes from Prescott could prove costly.

Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys have been together for seven years now. Their association began during the 2016 season and has continued strongly since then. There might be a slight bump in this association this year with the arrival of Trey Lance, the former first-round pick from the San Francisco 49ers.

Prescott had a terrible 2022 season missing 5 weeks due to injury and throwing league-high 15 interceptions. To get Lance from the 49ers after Prescott’s worst season of his career puts him under huge pressure to deliver this year. Although they won their Wild Card round match-up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season, they were beaten by the 49ers in the divisional round.

The Cowboys will begin their season against the New York Giants on September 10. They have shown plenty of faith in Prescott over the years and it is high time that he delivers. If not, then Lance replacing Prescott as QB1 will happen sooner rather than later.
