During the 12th edition of the annual NFL Honors awards show, the league decided to pay tribute to Ukraine, and its Soldiers who are fighting for their country in their war against Russia. The Washington Commanders‘ head coach Ron Rivera was named the winner of the Salute to Service award, which is given out every year to the person who showed continuous support to the military community.
The Commanders’ HC Ron Rivera became the 12th person to win the award. Rivera, throughout his career as a head coach, has demonstrated tremendous support for the military community. He has often cited his Army background as a huge reason for his success on the field. The 61-year-old has previously won the Coach of the Year award two times back in 2013 and 2015 when he was working with the Carolina Panthers.
“It is a tremendous honor to be selected as the Salute to Service Award recipient,” Rivera said in a statement. “I humbly accept this award on behalf of my father, Eugenio Rivera, who served as a Warrant Officer in the United States Military for 32 years. Having grown up in a military household, I experienced the sacrifices that military members and their families must make firsthand, and I have always wanted to use my platform to raise awareness and assist the great men and women of our armed forces and their families.
Furthermore, he also paid tribute to the Ukrainian soldiers who are selflessly fighting against the Russian soldiers to protect their motherland. And then, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared on the big screen to appreciate the soldiers for their bravery.
Social media reacts to NFL honoring the Ukrainian soldiers
During the event, Ukraine’s President Zelensky appeared via a video feed on the big screen and thanked the American people for their continuous support of Ukraine in its war against Russia. Furthermore, he also appreciated the Ukrainian football player who quit playing the sport to join the Army.
NFL fans on social media had mixed reactions to NFL’s tribute to Ukraine. Some people thought it was unnecessary to mix politics with sport and accused the league of virtue signaling.
Nonetheless, the NFL has always raised its voice against injustice, whether it’s against the racial inequalities in the United States or the war against Ukraine, and by the looks of it they will continue to do so in the future.
