The 2023 NFL season has seen so many injuries within just the first 9 weeks. In that trend, the Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford recently suffered a thumb injury and missed their week 9 game against the Green Bay Packers.

In his absence, the second-string quarterback Brett Rypien took over the job and had a horrible outing against the Packers. And now, while Stafford is still recovering from his injury, the Rams have made a surprising move to sign the free agent QB Carson Wentz.

According to multiple reports, the Rams have signed the veteran signal-caller Carson Wentz to their roster. The Rams have made this move during their bye week, which will give enough time for Wentz to settle in with his new team. This move comes in the wake of Stafford’s lingering thumb injury.

Back in week 8, Stafford left the Rams’ game against the Dallas Cowboys with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb. Due to the injury, Stafford missed the Rams’ week 9 game. As previously mentioned, the backup QB Brett Rypien took over the team and had a horrific outing as he only completed 46.4% of his pass attempts for 130 yards and 1 interception.

The Rams ended up waiving Rypien and added Carson Wentz as their backup. Wentz was a former second-overall pick, drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2016. During his sophomore year, Wentz put up a great campaign as he received his first Pro Bowl nod and finished 3rd in the MVP voting.

But constant injuries put a halt to his career and he eventually lost his starting QB job to Jalen Hurts in 2021. After that, he had a couple of brief stints with the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Commanders. And now, he’ll get a chance at redemption with the Los Angeles-based football team.

Social media reacts to the Rams signing Carson Wentz

NFL fans on social media couldn’t believe the Rams got desperate enough to sign the 30-year-old Carson Wentz, who couldn’t find a team to play and remained a free agent till the Rams decided to scoop him up.

Nonetheless, Wentz is only expected to serve as a backup QB for now. But, if Matthew Stafford couldn’t recover from his injury on time to face the Seattle Seahawks in week 11, Wentz would get a shot at the starting QB gig. It will be interesting to see how things pan out in Los Angeles over the next few weeks.
