The Los Angeles Chargers have done it! They have signed their franchise QB Justin Herbert to a massive 5-year deal worth up to $262 million. That contract makes Herbert the highest-paid QB of all time by annual average value over the likes of the Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and the Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen.

This massive deal comes a day after the Los Angeles-based football team started their training camp for the upcoming season. The deal will keep Herbert with the Chargers through the 2029 season and has a no-trade clause attached to it according to NFL reports. Additionally. the expensive contract has $133.7 million in full guarantees and $193.7 million in injury guarantees.

With this signing, Herbert becomes the third franchise QB to sign a blockbuster deal in the 2023 off-season. Previously, the Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts and the Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson both signed 5-year deals in a similar pay grade. Moreover, this contract also sets the field for the Cincinnati Bengals signal-caller Joe Burrow, who is eligible for an extension and is expected to sign a new deal soon with the Bengals.

On the field, Herbert has the third most passing yards in the league since 2020, only behind Patrick Mahomes and the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady. Herbert has earned his contract with his excellence on the field, but some fans believe the Chargers overpaid for the 25-year-old quarterback.

NFL fans on social media could not fathom the Chargers giving a massive $262 million deal to Justin Herbert. Fans questioned what Herbert has done in the league to be earning more than the likes of Mahomes, Allen, and Lamar Jackson. Check out some of the reactions below.

Some people pointed out Herbert’s lack of playoff success, especially the Chargers choking away a 27-0 lead against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the wildcard game earlier this year.

Herbert was drafted by the Chargers in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. The Oregon product immediately took over the league as he registered 4,336 passing yards and 31 passing touchdowns, which led to him winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

In his second year in the league, he took his game up a notch as he threw for 5,014 yards and 38 touchdowns and received his first Pro Bowl nod. The former Pro Bowl QB has been a dominant force in the league for the last three years and got paid handsomely. Now that he is getting paid a lot, the Chargers would expect his regular-season success to turn into playoff victories and a Super Bowl in the future.
