The Kansas City Chiefs have promoted Matt Nagy from their quarterbacks’ coach to become their new offensive coordinator. The team made the announcement on Friday, just a week after the departure of Eric Bieniemy, who worked as the Chiefs OC for the last five years. Bieniemy left the Chiefs to become the new offensive coordinator and assistant head coach of the Washington Commanders.
Matt Nagy previously worked as the offensive coordinator of the Chiefs for one year in 2017, just a year before Patrick Mahomes took over as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback. After the successful 2017 season, Nagy accepted the head coaching job at the Chicago Bears and worked there for four years. At first, Nagy saw some success as he went for 12-4 in his first year as a head coach and made the playoffs, which led him to win the 2018 Coach of the Year honors.
However, it didn’t work out well for him in the long term, since that was the only winning season he had in four years. Following his unsuccessful stint as a head coach, Nagy came back to the Chiefs as the QBs coach and senior offensive assistant. The 44-year-old coach helped Patrick Mahomes to have a historic season, which led Mahomes to win his second league MVP and second Super Bowl MVP.
And now, after a successful season with the Chiefs, the Kansas-based football team has decided to promote Matt Nagy as their new OC. However, Andy Reid will reportedly still maintain play-calling duties.
Social media rips the Chiefs’ new OC Matt Nagy

Fans on social media had a field day after the Chiefs announced that Matt Nagy will be the replacement of the renowned offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Many people pointed out Nagy’s failure as the Chicago Bears head coach as the reason why they believe Nagy shouldn’t have got the job. But what many people forget to see is that he was a very good offensive coordinator with the Chiefs in the past.
Moreover, Nagy won the Coach of the Year award in his first year as a head coach, with Mitchell Trubisky as his QB. So, he certainly knows what he’s doing but just somehow failed to repeat the success in Chicago. However, he will now have one of the easiest jobs in NFL history as he will be the offensive coordinator in Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes’ offense. There is very little chance that someone can fail at this job.
