Another NFL game, another controversial penalty in the final seconds! This time it happened during the Dak Prescott-led Dallas Cowboys‘ crucial week 17 game against the Detroit Lions. Jared Goff and the Lions were the victims of the controversial penalty on Saturday.

With less than 30 seconds left in the fourth quarter, the Lions scored a touchdown to cut down Dallas’ lead to 1 point. Instead of going for an extra point kick and taking the game to overtime, the Lions’ head coach Dan Campbell decided to go for a 2-point attempt and seal the game.

Jared Goff, who took the snap from under center, faked a handoff to his running before completing a pass to a wide-open offensive lineman Taylor Decker. It seemed the Lions successfully converted the 2-point attempt, but it was called back by the referees as they called an ineligible receiver penalty on Decker.

On the second try, Goff threw an incomplete pass, but the Lions got a break after the referees called an off-side penalty on the Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons. Finally, on the third attempt, Goff threw an incomplete pass to wide receiver Josh Reynolds, leading to the Cowboys securing a victory in a thrilling game.

Goff didn’t have a great outing on Saturday as he threw multiple interceptions, including one during the final 2 minutes of the game. He failed to help his team better their shot at the No.1 seed in the NFC playoffs picture.

On the flip side, Dak Prescott and the Dallas-based football narrowly escaped a loss and are still in the hunt to win the NFC East division title. The Cowboys’ number 1 receiver CeeDee Lamb had a remarkable night as he caught 13 passes for 227 yards and 1 touchdown while averaging 17.5 yards per carry. He also made history by breaking Michael Irvin’s record of most receptions in a single season in the Cowboys’ history.
