ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith must’ve thought he was on his own show First Take when he started an unnecessary comparison between the pop icon Rihanna and the Queen Beyoncé. Instead, he was on the Sherri Shepherd daytime talk show SHERRY when he made the comparison and pissed off many people, and got blasted for it on social media.

The ESPN analyst joined Sherri Shepherd on her show to talk about his new book “Straight Shooter: A Memoir of Second Chances and First Takes.” While talking on the show Sherri asked him if he was excited about Rihanna’s Super Bowl halftime performance. His answer to this question has received massive backlash from Rihanna fans.

“I don’t want to say I’m not excited,” said Smith. “She’s fantastic. That’s not where I’m going with this, ladies and gentlemen, she’s a lot of things, She’s spectacular, actually. And congratulations on new mamahood.” Smith continued about Rihanna. “There’s one thing she’s not, she ain’t Beyoncé.

Stephen A. Smith further continued to downplay the 9-time Grammy Award winner by saying that there are levels and Beyoncé is above everyone else.  “Rihanna’s music is fantastic. She’s great, she’s a sister. I love her dearly, I listen to her music. I’m gonna support her ’til the cows come home! I’m just telling you, for me, there’s Beyoncé, there’s everybody else.”

Rihanna fans on social media did not like Smith’s comparison between the two female icons in the music industry. Many believe that was absolutely no necessity for the comparison to be made between the two.

Stephen A. Smith did not expect the segment to blow out and create a massive backlash against him. So he did the right thing by owning up to his mistake and apologizing for his unwanted comparison between the two icons.

“I’m gonna own it,” he said“I know what y’all tryin’ to do. But I’m gon’ own it because I get paid to speak for a living, so I need to be more careful. I want Rihanna to know: You’re a superstar, you’re sensational, you’re spectacular. You’re no joke. And you are a worthy person to be doing the Super Bowl halftime show.”

Rihanna was roped in by the National Football League in September to perform in the Super Bowl halftime show after their reportedly failed attempt at roping in the famous pop singer Taylor Swift.
