The football gods really didn’t spare the San Francisco 49ers this season. The 49ers named Trey Lance, the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, as the starter after spending his rookie season as a backup to Jimmy Garoppolo. After playing for two weeks, he suffered a season-ending injury and Jimmy G took over as the quarterback.
Garoppolo managed to lead the 49ers to an 8-4 record before falling to a foot injury in Week 13. After this, started the magical dream run of third-string rookie quarterback Brock Purdy, who didn’t lose a single game including the postseason, and took San Francisco to the NFC Championship game.
However, as luck would have it, Purdy was injured in the first quarter of the game and was replaced by Josh Johnson until the third quarter when he returned. Because Purdy wasn’t under center, the 49ers succumbed and lost the game to the Philadelphia Eagles 31-7. The refs are the real culprits for the 49ers losing the game because of their poor officiating.
Kyle Shanahan loses his cool as refs penalize the 49ers
The refs made and missed way too many calls in the NFC Championship game. During the third quarter, the Eagles were punting the ball after failing to convert on downs. Eagles’ punter Brett Kern received the snap and kicked the ball but was run into by 49ers’ Jordan Mason due to which Kern fell to the ground. The ref flagged Mason and was penalized 15 yards and Philadelphia received a new set of downs.
During the replay, it was clearly evident that Mason was pushed into Kern by Jack Stoll. The refs unnecessarily penalized Mason, who was an innocent victim in this case. This lifeline thrown by the refs to the Eagles resulted in quarterback Jalen Hurts rushing in the endzone to score a touchdown and the Eagles were up by 28-7. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was furious with the refs for their unnecessary call and had a strongly worded exchange with them. Fans were also extremely irate by a poor call and expressed their anger on Twitter as they thrashed the officials.
This wasn’t the only mistake of the refs during the game. They missed another clear call when Eagles’ star wideout DeVonta Smith caught the one-handed touchdown during the first drive of the game. During the replay, it was clear that Smith didn’t have control of the ball as he touched the ground. The poor officiating of these refs is a serious issue, and the NFL has to take some action because teams lose crucial points because of missed or unnecessary calls.
