Taylor Heinicke has always been a backup QB and has never got the starter role in any team. The 29-year-old was signed by the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2015 and has been a reliable commodity since then.
Although, this time it feels like the Commanders don’t need the reliability, and they are set to part ways with Heinicke after three seasons with him. Heinicke is set to be a free agent next season with no hopes of a team showing interest in him.
The Commanders backup recently featured on the Pat McAfee Show and spoke about what the future holds for him while also revealing the team he likes the most.
Heinicke shared his desire to be a starter for a team like the Packers when asked about the favorable team he would love to play for after becoming a free agent. However, he also praised the backup job, calling it one of the best jobs in America.
“I’m not gonna say any teams. Obviously, I would love to go to the Packers. That’s been a childhood dream of mine to play for the Packers. But, other than that, obviously, I want to play. I want to start,” Heinicke stated on the Pat McAfee Show. “And if that opportunity doesn’t come up, being a backup in the NFL is probably one of the best jobs in America.”
Taylor Heinicke was replaced by Sam Howell by the end of the season
The Commanders are in a precarious position currently where nothing is going right for them. From issues ranging from ownership to team management, Washington is in trouble and they need help.
However, Taylor Heinicke was content with his backup job, as it offers good money and lots of work, while he doesn’t need to break his back every week. Regardless, when the backup QB is asked to come on, he needs to perform or else, he can become out of favor pretty quickly and that’s what happened with Heinicke.
The 29-year-old QB wasn’t able to perform in the playoff contention game against the Browns as they lost. The aftermath of the game was brutal for Heinicke as he was replaced by QB Sam Howell immediately.
Taylor Heinicke had a decent run with the Commanders where he started 24 games and threw for 32 touchdowns while also throwing 21 interceptions during his previous two seasons in Washington.
