Russell Wilson is smiling once more. After signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the veteran quarterback went back to his alma mater on Saturday and enjoyed basketball.
Just six days after winning the ACC, the 11th-ranked NC State Wolfpack men’s basketball team faced off against the 14th-ranked Oakland Golden Grizzlies at PPG Paints Arena in North Carolina. It was little to separate the sides, with NC State taking a slight 3-point lead heading into the second half.
The scores were 53–50 when the CBS Sports camera panned toward the VIP Suite in the stands. Russell Wilson was enjoying his former school, sitting alongside former CEO of Legendary Entertainment Thomas Tull, putting on a great show. It’s nothing out of the ordinary because players frequently visit their previous institutions.
However, his attire caught everyone’s attention, especially the cap he was wearing. Football fans are used to seeing Wilson in Seattle Seahawks or Denver Broncos gear, but this was the first time the 35-year-old publically wore Pittsburgh Steelers merch.
The Super Bowl winner signed a one-year, $1.2 million deal with the Steelers following an early exit from the Broncos. His Denver house, which he put up for sale before moving to Steel City, saw a buyer picked it up from the market on Thursday.
Russell Wilson congratulated NC State for beating Oakland
Wilson left North Carolina as a happy man after the Wolfpack won against the Grizzlies. The game finished 79-73 in favor of NC State. Following the victory, the nine-time Pro Bowler shared a congratulatory message on Instagram.
Moreover, he shared a similar sentiment on X (formerly Twitter).
Russell Wilson is a regular visitor to the basketball court. When he was still in the process of leaving Denver, he attended the Boston Celtics vs. Brooklyn Nets game on Valentine’s Day with his wife Ciara and son, Win. After dropping 41 points in a 118-110 win over the Nets, Celtics star Jayson Tatum gave Win his jersey as a memento.
As for Wilson, he spent four seasons with NC State from 2007 to 2010. He red-shirted in his rookie year but did not play a game, but became the starter in 2008. Three years from then on, he completed close to 700 passes with a completion percentage of 58, for more than 8,500 passing yards, 76 touchdowns, and 26 interceptions. Wilson played his final year of college football for the Wisconsin Badgers before the Seahawks drafted him in 2012.
