The Buffalo Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs was named one of the captains for the 2023 NFL season. This will be his third in four seasons of captainship with Buffalo and his third straight year.
It’s a sign that the alleged tension between the 29-year-old and the Bills’ has subsided. His recent selection as one of the captains should act as a catalyst in their push for a strong run in the loaded AFC. Diggs was delighted to be appointed as one of the key players in the squad.
“When you get named a captain, that’s like reassurance,” the Pro Bowler said on Thursday after practice, as per ESPN. “For me, it means more now than it did when I was there, my first time.”
The Maryland graduate deserves to be named one of the leaders for the Bills. In his three seasons at Orchard Park, Stefon Diggs has more than 4,000 receiving yards with 138 receptions and 29 touchdowns. He was even named All-Pro in 2020.
However, just a few days ago, his future with the Buffalo franchise looked to be in jeopardy. A rumored falling out with quarterback Josh Allen prompted trade rumors. Diggs even missed the OTAs and minicamp in the offseason. But he rejoined the team before the preseason games kicked off and claimed he wanted to 100% retire as a Bill and aim to earn a Super Bowl ring or two.
Who are the other captains besides Stefon Diggs?
There are usually several captains on a football team. That’s because the size of the squad is massive, and unlike other sports where only one person is named the team captain, NFL teams need multiple.
Keeping that in mind, the Buffalo Bills, besides Stefon Diggs, gave center Mitch Morse, first-time captain wide receiver Gabe Davies, and safeties Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, and quarterback Josh Allen, were given the responsibilities of leading the team.
Allen recently made an appearance on Mad Dog Sports Radio. The 27-year-old spoke about his relationship with Diggs and how they managed to keep outside noise at bay.
“I know it’s hard to win in this league consistently,” he told Adam Schein, the host. “I don’t really hear all that outside noise. The type of men that we have in this facility, in this locker room, is a special group.”
Allen revealed that he loves playing alongside Stefon Diggs and that he loves the wide receiver ‘like a brother.’ That camaraderie will be put to the test when the New York Jets face off against the New York Jets on Monday night football in Week 1 on Sept. 11.
