Bringing the former legendary linebacker DeMeco Ryans back into the Houston Texans was probably the best decision taken by the franchise last year. Not only did their defense improve, but their offense emerged as one of the most solid ones, with the addition of players like Will Anderson Jr., Derek Stingley Jr., Nico Collins, and the phenomenal rookie CJ Stroud.
And it is because of him and his decision to draft Ohio State star QB Stroud as the second overall draft pick, Houston succeeded in securing a playoff berth after three embarrassing and poor seasons.
As fans celebrated Ryans’ rallying the Texans to their first playoffs since 2019, a former racist comment made by Stephen A. Smith resurfaced on the internet, when the sports analyst suggested Black coaches should decline the opportunity to coach the Texans, amidst the firing of Lovie Smith.
The Houston Texans organization, I’m going to say something loud and clear over the national airwaves and I don’t give a damn what anybody thinks--African Americans need not apply. This is not an organization that has been fair to African Americans.said Smith in an episode of First Take, back in January 2023
Though obviously, Smith faced quite a backlash for his comment and Ryans ignored his suggestions and jumped on the opportunity to coach his former team. However, fans are still not over last year’s comments from the veteran analyst.
Fan slammed Stephen A. Smith with Texans’ success under DeMeco Ryan
Houston Texans fans brought back Smith’s racist comment on the franchise’s history with Black coaches from his First Take show. The intention was to slam the analyst for suggesting Black coaches not join the Texans, despite the team’s success under them.
Once again, as the Texans opted for a Black coach leadership for their team, it’s the best decision they made, considering Houston’s success under Ryans.
One fan hoped that Smith to lose all the platforms as an analyst, claiming, “He has lost all credibility and relevance.” While another wrote, “You owe DeMeco an apology tomorrow morning.” Fans called the analyst a “racist clown” and “obnoxious person.”
