Veteran sports analyst Stephen A. Smith is still unhappy with Mike McDaniel regarding his treatment of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa last season. He has stern words for the Miami Dolphins head coach.
“I don’t want to be excessive,” Smith said in the Tuesday edition of ESPN’s First Take. “I’m serious, and I’m not joking. I don’t like listening to this man.”
He said this in reply to contributor Marcus Spears‘ assessment that the Dolphins are capable of winning the AFC East in 2023. Smith believes that the Miami franchise will finish third but will reach the wildcards. Then he turned his attention to McDaniel and his mistreatment of Tagovailoa.
“It’s [unconscionable] how you (Mike McDaniel) let Tagovailoa on that field against the Cincinnati Bengals after watching him concussed [on Sunday],” Stephen A. Smith said in a stern tone.
He is pointing out that in the spring of last year, Tua Tagovailoa suffered back-to-back concussions. However, neither the Dolphins nor the NFL gave him the correct treatment. Stephen A. argues that the concussion protocol has already been in play since September, so why not apply it?
“You almost got him killed,” he claimed. “We all watched Tua against Buffalo and saw how discombobulated he was. Then we find out he’s concussed the following Monday.” Mike McDaniel tried to damage control by saying they tried to keep the 25-year-old safe. But Smith refused to have any of it.
Tua Tagovailoa reportedly suffered a second concussion against the Green Bay Packers in their Christmas Day loss. He remained on the protocol for over a month. The 2022 NFL passing leader even learned jiu-jitsu in the offseason so he could learn to fall down in a better way to avoid further injuries.
Mike McDaniel talks about Jalen Ramsey’s surgery

The sad news of Miami cornerback Jalen Ramsey being injured until late in the 2023 season might have upset a lot of Dolphins fans. However, coach Mike McDaniel revealed that Ramsey went through surgery, which was successful.
“I think the surgery went about as well as it could have,” McDaniel told NBC Sports. He claimed the 28-year-old is looking forward to getting back on the field. “He’s immediately saying, ‘Tell me what time I’m going to beat it by a month,” Fins team HC revealed.
The Miami Dolphins drafted Jalen Ramsey as their 2023 third-round draft pick from the Los Angeles Rams. Last season, he had 88 tackles and 18 interceptions in 17 games.
