Patrick Mahomes ’embarrassed’ himself, according to Stephen A. Smith, when he threw a temper tantrum following an offside call on Kadarius Toney on Sunday night. Mahomes was furious because if the officials hadn’t pulled back the play, then the scores would have been 23-20 and the Kansas City Chiefs would have been celebrating a win.
Late in the game, Chiefs wideout Toney lined up himself in the neutral zone before the snap and appeared to have scored the game-winning touchdown until it was chalked off for offensive offside.
The CBS cameras caught Mahomes smashing his helmet on the ground with the decision in frustration. Smith believes that it was an unsightly gesture from the reigning NFL MVP.
“Patrick Mahomes may be the greatest quarterback we’ve ever seen, but it’s the first time in his career I’ve seen him embarrass himself,” Smith said on Monday’s segment of ESPN’s First Take.
He wasn’t done bashing the Chiefs, though. His focus shifted to head coach Andy Reid, with whom Smith has been acquainted since his time at the Philadelphia Inquirer. Reid said after the game came out that he had never been hit with an offensive offside because the officials gave him a prior warning.
However, Smith believes it’s natural for a player to be upset after a disappointing result; it’s different for an experienced coach like Reid.
Your receiver lined up offside. Period. Now, we don't even have to get into the fact that the dropped passers by receivers have now elevated to 33 dropped passes by Kansas City receivers this year!Smith shouted
Stephen A. Smith ripped into Kadarius Toney
Patrick Mahomes, after the game, told Bills quarterback Josh Allen that the Kadarius Toney offside decision was the worst he had ever seen. Stephen A. Smith doesn’t believe so; rather, he questioned why the Chiefs aren’t doing something about their dropped catches.
The way Kadarius Toney was, not only was he offside, but then he was the one that Travis Kelce lateraled the ball to and ran it in for the touchdown. And by the way, he also had a drop earlier in the game. So you've got a dropped pass; you lined up offside.Smith said:
NFL.com‘s Ian Rapoport revealed that the league is looking into Mahomes’ post-game comments, targeting the referee’s decision. Depending on the words, they may even penalize the five-time Pro Bowler.
Mahomes said in the press conference that it was one of the best plays of Kelce’s career, which will count for nothing. The loss means the Chiefs are now 8-5 and sit third in the AFC playoff seed. Their next opponents are the New England Patriots.
