The Washington Commanders recently got a makeover as they hired the former Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury as their new offensive coordinator. As a result, they had to fire their previous OC Eric Bieniemy after just one year with the team. Amidst this, ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith uses the racism card to downplay Kingsbury’s achievements.

In Monday’s episode of the ESPN show First Take, Stephen A. Smith, Damien Woody, and Chris ‘Mad Dog’ Russo were discussing the Commanders choosing to hire Kliff Kingsbury. During the segment, Smith had a fiery take while belittling Kingsbury.

I challenge anybody in football to tell me I’m wrong about this. [Kliff Kingsbury] is more known for his relationships with quarterbacks and his fly a** crib that he had during the NFL Draft when COVID was going on, and we saw where he lived. He’s more known for that than he is for winning football games.

Furthermore, Smith went on and on about the Commanders hiring Kingsbury. He said that there are no ‘bonafide football reasons’ for the Washington-based football team to hire the former NFL head coach and he is only there because of his connections.

Smith said that Kingsbury couldn’t produce in college football and failed at his head coaching gig with the Arizona Cardinals, but still ends up with another shot only because of who he knows.

Many believe Washington only hired Kingsbury due to his connection with the USC Trojans QB Caleb Williams, who is projected to be the No.1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Kingsbury worked with Williams at USC last season. The Commanders are currently holding the No.2 pick and could move up on the draft boards.

Stephen A. Smith believes Black people can’t have connections like Kliff Kingsbury

After putting the Commanders’ new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury on blast, ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith went on a lengthy rant about how Black coaches are not able to get the same benefits as their White counterparts.

We talk about diversity, and we certainly saw Black coaches getting hired and all that other stuff. That’s not where I’m going. I’m saying from a historical perspective, we look at a guy like Kliff Kingsbury, and you know what we see as Black folks? This is the kind of stuff that don’t happen for Black folks.

Nonetheless, the Commanders have managed to arrange a new coaching staff. They are now expected to select a new quarterback in the upcoming draft to turn their franchise around.
