Stephen A. Smith knows how to divide opinion among viewers with hot takes. Keeping that in mind, he brought back another edition of the infamous A-list. The line-up was fairly predictable, but the one name that he did not include was Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts.

It came as a surprise to many, as the veteran analyst has been an avid admirer of the 25-year-old. Just a few days ago, Smith claimed on First Take that the Pro Bowler possessed every quality that he needed in order to win the Super Bowl. So, it’s a surprise considering he almost won it last year if it weren’t for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Hurts was one of the best players in an Eagles jersey last season. The former second-round pick threw for 3701 yards with an average of 8 and scored 22 touchdowns, along with 760 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns. It was more than enough to earn second-team All-Pro status.

However, in the eyes of Stephen A. Smith, that wasn’t enough for him to be one of his chosen five. Hurts was bested by his Super Bowl nemesis Patrick Mahomes, Bengals Joe Burrow, 49ers Nick Bosa, Bills Josh Allen, and Vikings Justin Jefferson.

Why did Jalen Hurts miss out on Stephen A. Smith’s A-list?

It’s hard to argue with the names Stephen A. has picked for his list of the top five NFL players. They are all leaders in their own positions.

As previously mentioned, Patrick Mahomes is coming off another stellar campaign that saw him win his second and third Lombardi Trophy in three years. The 27-year-old bagged MVP honors and led the NFL for total yards by a quarterback in a season (5,614).

Then there’s Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Despite injury woes limiting his game time, he achieved 4,000 passing yards in back-to-back seasons and more than 30 touchdowns each time. His inclusion cannot be refuted.

In the third spot, Stephen A. Smith chose San Francisco 49ers rusher Nick Bosa. The former No. 2 overall pick recorded 18.5 sacks last season and 15.5 the year before. He is one of Kyle Shanahan’s main men in the Bay Area offense.

Fourth place went to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. The rumored boyfriend of Hailee Steinfeld threw for another 4000-yard season last term with 35 touchdowns that earned him his second Pro Bowl since 2020.

And the penultimate name on Stephen A. Smith’s list was Minnesota Vikings explosive wide receiver, Justin Jefferson. The 24-year-old LSU graduate led the league in both pass receptions and receiving (128, 1809). Since his 2020 draft, Jefferson has bagged Pro Bowl accolades in every season.

There’s no doubt that Jalen Hurts will have another amazing year and is his favorite to lead the Eagles back to the Championship game. He will start his 2023 NFL journey on September 11, as the New England Patriots roll into town.
