The league is just a couple of days away from the start of the much-anticipated 2023 NFL season. On September 7, the 2023 season will officially kick off with a game between the defending Super Bowl Champions Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions. Amidst this, the renowned ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith has revealed his list of top 5 NFL teams heading into the 2023 season and he surprisingly left Josh Allen’s Buffalo Bills from the list.

During a recent episode of the ESPN show First Take, Stephen A. Smith listed the top 5 NFL teams in the upcoming season. Smith’s top 5 teams were the Chiefs, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Cincinnati Bengals, the San Francisco 49ers, and the New York Jets in that particular order. The long-time NFL analyst’s top 4 teams were in the conference games last season.

The Bengals and the Chiefs fought in the AFC Championship game. The 49ers and the Eagles faced each other in the NFC game. But Smith’s surprised everyone by putting the Jets ahead of the Josh Allen-led Bills on his list.

His reasoning for putting the Jets in the top 5 was the work they did in the off-season. Smith claimed that the Jets having Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, a top 5 defense, and Dalvin Cook in the backfield makes them one of the toughest teams to beat in the AFC.

However, Shannon Sharpe didn’t agree with the NY Jets being a top-five team and instead placed the Bills and the Dallas Cowboys in the 5th spot over the New York-based franchise in his list. When Sharpe added the Bills to his list, Stephen A. asked, “Wait, the Bills?”

To which Shannon replied, that the only reason the Bills are placed in the 5th place and not the top 3 in his list is because of Von Miller‘s injury concerns. Shannon claimed if Miller was fully healthy he would have ranked the Bills even higher.

There’s a new dynamic duo in town! It’s Shannon Sharpe and Stephen A. Smith. After leaving the Fox Sports show Undisputed, Shannon signed a deal with ESPN to work as a repeating guest in First Take.

Sharpe first appeared on First Take on Monday and understandably kept uttering his former partner Skip Bayless‘ name while addressing Stephen A. As a result, in Tuesday’s episode, Smith wore a name tag to remind Shannon that he is not working with Skip anymore.

The first 2 episodes of First Take featuring Shannon Sharpe have been received well by the audience. Shannon will continue to appear on First Take every Monday and Tuesday throughout the NFL season.
