The Trey Lance trade to the Dallas Cowboys has sent shockwaves around the NFL world. Lance was the no. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and for the San Francisco 49ers to trade him after just two years is baffling. Lance was injured most of last season and did not have a great start in this year’s preseason games. He was eventually traded to the Cowboys for a fourth-rounder.
This news has caused a lot of reactions from the fans as well as from the members of the media. Host of ESPN’s show First Take, Stephen A. Smith, took to Twitter to react to this news. “I see what you are trying to do trading for another quarterback Dallas Cowboys, could that be because you don’t have that much faith in Dak Prescott?” Smith said. “I am not sure, I am just asking. You got another quarterback. I wonder why?”. Smith was clearly having fun with this as he was mocking the Cowboys.
Smith further added, “Didn’t Cooper Rush go 5–1 as a starter for you last year? What do you need a quarterback for? What do you a need another quarterback for? I am just asking, I don’t know the answer to that question, but I do know this it ain’t going to help you this year. See ya soon, ya hear.”
Trey Lance was supposed to be the 49ers’ franchise quarterback for years to come. Now, he will back up Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush this season in Dallas. Prescott did not have a great season last year and will hope to change that with the team getting another quarterback. Prescott’s window is closing fast, and this season might be his last chance to cement his position as the Cowboys’ QB1.
Can Trey Lance revive his career in Dallas?
Trey Lance was named as the starting QB for the San Francisco 49ers last year. Fast forward to this year, and Lance is in Dallas, backing up Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. Lance was the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and was expected to be the long-time successor to Jimmy Garoppolo. That plan came crashing down when he was injured most of last season and had a terrible start to this season. The rise of Brock Purdy as the starting QB was another reason why Lance was shown the exit door in San Fran so soon.
Now he is in Dallas, with the America’s team. The scrutiny will be there, but this might be exactly what Lance needs to revive his career. He won’t be expected to start this season and will have the opportunity to learn from a solid QB in Dak Prescott and a Super Bowl-winning coach in Mike McCarthy.
The Cowboys open their season against the New York Giants on September 10, and with Trey Lance, they have a loaded QB room. Prescott will be backed up by Cooper Rush, who went 5-1 last season, and Will Grier. Add Lance to that, and they have a solid QB room.
