When the Cardinals included an obscure independent study addendum in Kyler Murray‘s massive contract extension in 2022, they received massive backlash for it. After drawing some heavy criticism, the Cardinals decided to remove it from the contract. But comments from former Cardinals’ players suggested that the study clause was a good move by the then-GM Steve Keim.

And now, during his recent appearance on the Green Light with Chris Long podcast, Steve Keim has opened up about the infamous study clause and shared a brutally honest assessment of the Cardinals QB Kyler Murray.

“(Kyler Murray) still needs to grow,” Keim said on the podcast. “He’s not a bad guy. He’s a good kid, has a good smile, has a nice way about him. I think it’s like anything: Guys have to continue to learn what it’s going to take to be great. Does he know what Tom Brady and Peyton Manning know of what it takes to be great? No.”

Steve Keim also backed up his study clause that required the Cardinals’ franchise quarterback to study film and game material for four hours per week to receive credit.

“Does he work? He does work. I think it’s just that side of the game — the film study, the attention to detail part that he can continue to improve upon, and I think he will. Kyler’s a proud guy, man. He doesn’t want to lose, and he doesn’t want to let people down,” said Keim.

Keim served as the Cardinals’ general manager for more than a decade. He was the one that was responsible for drafting Kyler Murray and giving him a 5-year $230.5 million contract extension.

Kyler Murray’s teammates also share similar sentiment about the QB

Apart from the Cardinals’ former GM Steve Keim, at least a couple of Murray’s teammates also share a similar sentiment about the talented QB. Murray’s former teammate CB Patrick Peterson once infamously said that Murray doesn’t care about anybody but himself.

Furthermore, Kyler’s current teammate OT Kelvin Beachum also recently claimed that the 2-time Pro Bowl QB needs to grow up and show some leadership. “I didn’t say he lacks leadership, I just think he needs to grow up a little bit. I think if he has the ability and willingness to grow up, he’s going to be just fine. They paid him for a reason, they paid him because of his talent. He has the ability to lead. When you’re in that position, we need you to lead more. You’re the face of the franchise . . . you have to lead in every single capacity,” said Beachum.

Kyler Murray has talent and the potential to lead the Cardinals franchise to Super Bowl glory. Moreover, if he can improve on his off-field aspects, he will certainly become one of the great players in Arizona’s sports history.
