A week has passed since the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers. However, discussions are still going on about what went wrong for the Niners. Interestingly enough, blame is falling on the shoulders of Brock Purdy and his head coach, Kyle Shanahan.
Amid all the criticism, Steve Spagnuolo stood by the side of the quarterback. In an interview with the All-City NFL, the DC claimed that Purdy had done everything that he could do. As per the coach himself, Purdy put on a heroic fight in the Super Bowl but unfortunately failed to bag the game.
They were behind in those other playoff games and he didn’t flinch... He didn’t flinch in this game. Nick Bolton hit him once right after he got rid of the ball… a couple other shots that he took and I don’t think he got flustered at all.The DC added.
Notably, this is not the first time Brock Purdy has received a lot of criticism on the internet, and Spanguolo is advocating in favor of him.
But I kinda felt that he wouldn’t, like I didn’t go in there thinking 'OK this is a young quarterback, let’s do this and we’ll get him out of his game', because he had proved it to me in those other games that wasn’t the case.Continuing further, he added
The quarterback received the game manager comment from the former signal caller, Cam Newton. Despite multiple criticisms, Newton stood by what he originally said about Purdy.
I’ve never said Brock Purdy was trash; what I did say is that Brock Purdy is a game manager--That’s not hate, that’s just what I feel to be facts. But I still reserve the right to say this: to be labeled a game-changer, Brock Purdy has to be the best player on the offensive side of the ball. And that’s not the case. The former signal caller said
Steve Spanguolo always maintained a high bar about Purdy
Despite all the rivalries, Steve Spagnuolo always thought highly of Brock Purdy. Ahead of the Super Bowl, the game manager’s comment was doing the rounds, and Spagnuolo clearly disapproved of the remark. He raised the bar for Purdy by saying that he was one of the best quarterbacks that he had seen.
We’ve had some crossover film (on Brock) during the course of the year, but when you dive into it and you watch him, it’s not a quarterback that’s managing or all those tabs they (media) put on him, he’s for real. Makes all the throws, really really smart, and what I didn’t know, is how athletic he is… Thoroughly, thoroughly impressed with him.The DC added.
Despite failing in the Super Bowl, the quarterback had a great performance in the regular season. His performance made some new fans, and it seems like Spanguolo is one of them.
