The wildcard matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks was a neck-and-neck game until the first half. The Seattle team held a one-point lead over Kyle Shanahan’s Niners at halftime but failed to capitalize on it as they would eventually go on to lose the game by a big margin. In fact, the Niners steamrolled Pete Carroll‘s team and it ended up being a blowout in the second half.

The Niners in the second half managed to score 25 points on the offense and only allowed six points on the defense. They didn’t give a chance to Geno Smith and his team at all. According to the 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga, the massive difference between the first-half performance and the second-half performance by the Niners is due to the extra motivation they got after the Seahawks defenders tried to play dirty football.

During the 10-minute mark in 3rd quarter of the game, the scoreboard read 17-16 in favor of the Seahawks and the Niners were facing a 3rd and 7 from Seattle’s 37-yard line. The Niners wideout Deebo Samuel made a big play to convert the 3rd down and kept the drive alive. After the play, the Seahawks DB Johnathan Abram unnecessarily twisted the leg of the receiver who was lying down on the field.

This dirty play caught the attention of the Niners players and their coach Kyle Shanahan, who immediately rushed to the field from the sidelines to support their wideout. After that dirty hit, the Niners outscored the Seahawks 25-6 and comfortably won the game. Furthermore, the Niners players called out the safety after the game was over.

Speaking in a post-game interview, 49ers All-Pro safety Hufanga was asked about the massive difference in their first-half and second-half performance. To which, he answered that the dirty play by the Seahawks DB shited the game’s momentum towards them.

“You know we stay together, you know, regardless of the outcome, that was going on…we at the end of the day we just wanted to stick together,” said Hufanga. “we saw what was going on with Deebo and they tried to kinda get a little dirty and you know, I think that’s where we really we build our momentum at. You know, everybody tried to go and continue to keep the fighti.. keep fighting and seize the moment at the end of the day.”

After the game, Deebo also commented on the incident and said that he almost lost his temper because of that play. “I stayed down a little because I almost lost my temper and you can see the definition of our team of IGYB… I got your back,” said Samuel about the incident.

Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers’ job is not finished yet as they patiently await their next opponent in the NFL Divisional round this weekend in their quest for the coveted Lombardi Trophy.
