In a shocking turn of events, the Houston Texans have decided to release Christian Kirksey, who was their linebacker and the regular starter, last season. He also captained the squad in their NFL run.

The 30-year-old LB signed a one-year deal with the Texans in 2021. He later followed another two-year contract with the team. He contributed to the team for two seasons and proved himself as a capable regular starter. In the first season, the player had 789 snaps and in the second year, he had a career-high of 1,141 snaps. He collected 124 tackles, three sacks, seven tackles for loss, seven QB hits, and two INTs last year. Overall, he played 30 games for the squad in the past two years.

Kirksey was not alone in leaving the squad for the Texans this season. The team has announced several cuts ahead of the NFL 2023-24 season. Apart from Kirksey, the others to join the list are Nick Vannet and Desmond King. Sources said that the team made a cut to these veterans to build a squad with young blood.

The veteran did not carry his cap hit worth $6.5 million. With the release of Kirksey, the team will save amounts worth $1 million.

Since Kirksey is a free agent now and he is in good shape, it is expected that a few teams will go for him ahead of the NFL season. According to some reports, there are three teams that can easily go for Kirksey. These three teams include the Baltimore Ravens, the Washington Commanders, and the Dallas Cowboys. All three teams have a weak spot in their linebacker positions. The Cowboys recently signed Trey Lance as their backup quarterback from the San Francisco 49ers. They can also go for another late-trading option ahead of the season.

The fans and spectators of the NFL did not take the exclusion of Kirkskey well. Right after the news was announced, they started expressing their grudge. Twitter was flooded with negative reactions from fans and others.

The majority of the fans highlighted the contributions that he made last season. Some of them also suggested other teams to trade him in. Overall the NFL fans were seen in disappointment after the news of his release made headlines.

Despite his performance, the 30-year-old linebacker found it difficult to make it through the pre-season games. He was subjected to a major injury in the practice, which compelled him to miss all the remaining pre-season games. Hence, the team management did not take any risk and released him ahead of the start of the tournament.

The Houston Texans will begin their 2023 campaign on September 10 against the Baltimore Ravens.
