When the 2023 season came to an end, Arch Manning must have thought he would finally have the chance to become the #1 quarterback in the coming season at the Texas Longhorns, considering current starter Quinn Ewers was predicted to announce for the 2024 NFL Draft. But Manning might have to postpone that thought.
Ewers played a pivotal role in the Longhorns’ run to the CFP Semifinals last season. They played against the #2-ranked team in college football, the Washington Huskies. Sadly, that’s as far as they managed to go. Despite the 318 yards from 24 passes and one touchdown from the 21-year-old, it wasn’t enough to see off the Huskies as they went down 37-31.
The consensus was that the Washington game was Ewers’ last outing as a Longhorn, and he will be in the mix for the 2024 NFL Draft. As per NFL Draftbuzz, he was projected to be the 7th quarterback to be taken in the draft.
However, on Thursday, he surprised everyone, and more importantly, Manning, by sharing a video tweet on X, stating,
I am coming back.
Quinn Ewer’s return to Texas has football fans fearing Arch Manning’s future in Austin
Even though Manning has a handsome NIL deal that brands him as an important player in college football, the coaching staff in Texas stuck with Ewers. Being the family member of Peyton Manning and Eli Manning has its perks, but that too did little for the young quarterback to dislodge his predecessor.
And now that Ewers has decided to finish his senior college year, football fans fear that Manning may well find game time limited. Or, worse, leave the program entirely.
Ewers is 16-6 as a starter. He aims to leave a legacy in Austin. In an interview with ESPN, he said,
I want to be the quarterback who worked every year to get better. The quarterback who loved his teammates, the quarterback who won a lot of football games, brought Texas football back to the top of college football, where it belongs.
Ewers threw for 3,479 yards with 22 touchdown passes and six interceptions in 2023. He achieved a quarterback rating of 78.3, which ranked him as the 17th-best signal-caller in the nation. Not only that, he made massive improvements in his pass completions from the 2022 season (from 58.1% to 69% in 2023) with an average of 8.8 yards per throw.
