The NFL is slowly turning into one of the most popular sports leagues in the world as it is trying to expand its reach further into Europe.
The NFL started its European tour with England, where once every season a team used to play their game in the country. Now with Germany also in the fold, the league is trying to expand further into France and Spain.
The Bucs recently beat the Seahawks in Allianz Arena, making it the first NFL game ever to be played in Germany. The league has signed a 4-year-old deal with the Country and hopes to extend it.
The first country to host games in Europe was England, as the owner of the Jaguars makes it a priority to play a home game in the country once a season.
The NFL is slowly turning into a world league as there are many countries hosting games for the American sport. Brett Gosper, the NFL head of the U.K. and Europe, wants to increase the commercial and fan value of the sport and is looking at Spain and France as his next spots.
“We need to do our homework to make sure that there is the possibility of a place to land any games in those markets, gauge interest of the host stadium, gauge interest of the host city, even the government, as to their enthusiasm to help us bring a game,” Gosper said.

NFL has added an extra game to their season for International Expansion
The NFL is looking to increase its brand value and challenge the most dominant sport in Europe, which is soccer. There are millions of fans of the sport and the league is finding out about the potential in European countries.
International expansion is also one of the reasons why the league has added the 17th game to the season. The league is committed to playing four international games each season.
With England and German done, the league will be looking at Spain as their next option because the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins already have home marketing rights in the country.
“When you know that there are teams operating in [the international rights program], you want to look at the prospect and the viability of potentially having games in those markets at some point,” Gosper said.
Currently, there are 5 international games this season. Three in London, one in Germany, and one in Mexico where the 49ers will play the Cardinals.
