Joining a divisional rival will annoy anyone, especially those who have a special connection with the team. Tiki Barber had a similar reaction to Saquon Barkley‘s signing with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Barkley’s one-year extension was close to ending, and the New York Giants had two choices ahead of them. Either give him a long-term deal or allow the running-back to leave. They chose later, and Barkley ended up with NFC East rivals the Philadelphia Eagles.
It was reported on Monday that Barkley had agreed to a three-year, $47 million deal to play alongside Jalen Hurts. He was met with criticism, not just from Giants fans who were distraught with the news; former Blue’s running back Tiki Barber was angry with the 27-year-old’s choice of destination.
Barber, who spent his entire NFL career on East Rutherford Road, lashed out at Barkley.
He's dead to us. You’re dead to us, SaquonTiki Barber said via WFAN Sports Radio
Saquon Barkley replied to Tiki Barber
It didn’t take much time for Barkley to reply to Barber.
You have been a hater since I got to New York... and all the “dead to me” talk—don't smile in my face when you see me.Barkley replied back to Barber
Not only that, he followed that message with another long tweet.
Lol yup you’re (Barber) the prime example of loyalty to a team.. I got the deal I wanted, secured more gm which wasn’t given to me before… so if fans are gonna hate me for that so be it! But I never turned my back on my teammates and always had theirsBarkley wrote
Before the Eagles deal, Barber warned Barkley that if he did want to leave, he should join any other team besides the Eagles (any NFC East team for that matter).
Go to Baltimore [Ravens]. Go to Houston [Texans] or go to the LA Chargers. Do not go to the Philadelphia Eagles, because if you do, that appreciation, respect, and reverence that we all have for you, Saquon, will be lost.Barber said while appearing on the WFAN radio show
He also added that the Giants fans will be happy to see him wearing the jersey of any other team. Except for Philadelphia Green.
No matter what happens in Philadelphia, we will hate it. You're [Barkely] going to turn into one of those people that we hate, and we don't want that.Barber said
Well, the 48-year-old’s words did little to deter the Penn State graduate from moving to familiar territories. Despite the ups and downs in New York, Barkley was an example of consistency. In 74 games, he carried the ball 1201 times for 5211 yards, scoring 35 touchdowns along with 288 catches for 2100 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. He was Pro Bowl twice and won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award (2018).
