“Time for a change?” LA Rams plan to resubmit a detailed proposal to the NFL to review ‘roughing the passer call’ amidst recent officiating controversies
The controversial calls by the referee in recent games have inspired hope in the LA Rams for their application to change the rules in the competition.
The Rams have planned to resubmit their application for a rule change that will allow the teams to review roughing the passer call that has received lots of criticism lately.
There were two controversial plays that happened in week 5 of the NFL’s 2022/23 season that led to outbursts from fans and teams alike. Those unnecessary penalties were given to Atlanta’s Grady Jarrett and one to the Chiefs’ Chris Jones.
The Rams think that amidst the outburst and this time the people’s support on their sides, the rule change proposal will do better with the NFL committee.
Last season, the Rams had submitted the same proposal to the committee for a potential rule change but it was voted out unanimously 9-0 and didn’t even make it on the stage. Though this time it feels different.
Although roughing the passer calls have been considerably gone down this season, the reason the Rams are pushing for the rule change is still unknown.
Roughing-the-passer penalties are down by 45% in the NFL. Will the LA Rams proposal be accepted this time?
The reason the Rams are pushing for a rule change is the reason for poor officiating, but the stats say otherwise. The roughing-the-passer penalties are down by 45% this season, through week 5 of the NFL. The NFL in the 2021/22 season saw 51, but it has considerably declined in 2022/23 to 28.
The NFL committee comprises six team owners and four head coaches. The Rams’ pitch will be decided amongst this audience when the NFL owners will meet for a meeting on Tuesday.
NFL’s executive vice president Troy Vincent also discussed the potential rule change on ESPN’s pre-game show. Vincent stated that the NFL will be open to any progressive potential rule changes.
Roughing the passer call has been a controversial subject since week 5 as the calls that were made were potential game-changers and ignited a lot of fury from the fans.
The NFL had decided a similar thing before, but the experiment failed and the rule wasn’t considered the next season. The NFL rule book notes: “When in doubt about a roughness call or potentially dangerous tactic against the quarterback, the referee should always call roughing the passer.” about roughing the passer call.
