Tom Brady is one of the greatest football players to ever step on the field. He has won 7 Super Bowl rings, has been to 15 Pro Bowls, and is the owner of plenty of records in the NFL. The legendary quarterback retired from the sport back in February following an ugly 2022 season.
And now, almost 9 months after his retirement, Brady has shared his opinion on the current level of officiating in the league while talking about the week 6 game between the New York Giants and the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.
During the recent episode of Brady’s Let’s Go! podcast with Jim Gray and Larry Fitzgerald, Brady chimed on in the debate whether or not the referee should’ve called a holding penalty on the Bills defensive back Taron Johnson during the final play on Monday night.“It’s definitely a penalty,” Brady said. “There was obviously a holding, they just didn’t call it.”
The plan in question was the final play at the end of the Bills’ week 6 game. The Giants were facing a 1st and goal with just 2 seconds left in the clock and the Giants QB Tyrod Taylor tried to connect with his tight end Darren Waller but failed to do so.
As a result, the Bills ended up winning the close game. After seeing the reply, many experts believe the referee should’ve called a defensive holding penalty on the Bills defender, which would’ve given New York one more shot at a game-winning touchdown.
Nonetheless, while Brady believes the refs should’ve thrown a flag on that play, the 15-time Pro Bowl QB still said that, in general, the referees are throwing a lot of penalty flags nowadays.
Tom Brady believes the refs are throwing too many flags
During a recent episode of the Sirius XM’s Let’s Go podcast, Brady talked about how the NFL referees are throwing a lot of yellow flags nowadays as compared to two decades ago when he was at the starting stage of his career.

“Football is a physical sport, there’s a physical element to all of this,” the future Hall of Famer said. “You throw a 15-yard flag for something that, you know, 20 years ago maybe wouldn’t have had a flag. That affects the game in a big way.”
There is some truth in Brady’s statements. According to NFLpenalties.com, the referees are on pace to call nearly 500 more penalties than last year. The 7-time Super Bowl champion is worried that the level of officiating is affecting the league in a big way.
