Looks like the social media comparison post of Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes made quite some noise. First, it was Denver Broncos fans reacting to it, but now it has even reached former New England Patriots’ Chad Johnson. And as it did, it instigated a debate on whether or not the franchise made the right decision by benching Wilson.
Entering week 16, the Broncos were on the playoff hunt as they faced off against the Patriots. However, after suffering a loss to a 4-11 team, things seemed to have taken a dramatic turn within the inner circle of the Broncos, mainly between quarterback Wilson and head coach Sean Payton.
Just a couple of days later, the franchise officially announced their decision to bench Wilson for the remaining two games of this regular season, while they promoted veteran backup Jarrett Stidham. It was quite clear that QB Wilson was not happy with the decision as he liked the social media post which compared his stats to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and they were surprisingly better.
While talking on the matter, Shannon Sharpe brought up Wilson’s news and his contract with Tom Brady‘s ex-teammate Johnson, on the recent episode of Nightcap Show.
Johnson said on Club Shay Shay when Sharpe mentioned Wilson’s contract with the Broncos to end in March:
That's Bulls**t!! Patrick Mahomes and Wilson's numbers are identical. So, I am trying to understand the move by the Broncos is simply a money move.Chad Johnson on Club Shay Shay
What’s the money-related reason to bench Russell Wilson?
As ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, the Broncos are supposed to give quarterback Wilson $39 million guaranteed for the 2024 season along with an additional $37 million if he fails in the physical in early March.
Now that Wilson has refused to renounce his injury guarantee, the franchise decided to bench him to save the $37 million by preventing him from getting injured. In the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers, Wilson will be the backup QB for Stidham.
Addressing the rumors, if the franchise decides to release the 35-year-old quarterback before next season, they will have an $85 million dead cap hit. But if they do after June 1, the dead cap money will be split for two seasons — $35.4 million in 2024 and $49.6 million in 2025.
