Tom Brady has managed to set yet another record despite having been retired from the NFL. The jersey worn by the seven-time Super Bowl champion in the final game of his 23-year illustrious career has sold at Sotheby’s auction for a record $1.4 million on Saturday.

The jersey that Brady wore in the 2022 NFL NFC Divisional Round game against the Dallas Cowboys has been authenticated by The MeiGray Group and was identified as the same. While his final NFL game was forgettable as it ended in a 31-14 loss, by no means did it diminish the value of his jersey. It had Tom Brady’s sign on it as well.

Some other jerseys at the auction are Lewis Hamilton’s 2013 Mercedes-Benz F1 W04 jersey, expected to fetch anywhere between $10 to $15 million. Brady has been breaking records when it comes to the sale of his merch. Back in 2021, when he decided to go to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, his jersey sales peaked and became the best-selling for an NFL player in the two-week period between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl.

Tom Brady broke Joe Montana’s record with the sale of his final game-worn jersey

The previous record for the priciest NFL jersey was held by Joe Montana who fetched an estimated $1.2 million, but Brady’s jersey has beaten that record by $200,000. The value of the jersey would have doubled if the quarterback had managed to make it to the Super Bowl, and if he had won it, then the starting price by itself would be in the ballpark of $3 million at the least.

Brady has been an anomaly when it comes to breaking records in jersey sales. Usually, the top players of any team account for an estimated 20% of the team’s sales, but with TB12, in his first year as a Buccaneer, his merch alone accounted for 50% of the team’s sales.

He had the record for the highest-selling jersey in 2018 and 2019 when he was on the New England Patriots. His move to Tampa skyrocketed jersey sales by 900 percent. Brady’s jersey beat Michael Jordan‘s game-worn UNC jersey as well which sold for $1.38 million, and a game-worn jersey during the 1986-87 NBA season that sold for half a million dollars.
