Why has Twitter removed Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers’ ‘blue tick’ whereas Tom Brady gets to keep it?
Tom Brady does not have to pay to retain his verified blue tick mark on Twitter while Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes have to. Take a look why this is the case.

Being the Greatest of All Time in your sport comes with its own fair share of privileges. Just ask Tom Brady. The former seven-time Super Bowl winner is one of the few individuals who has been able to keep his blue tick on Twitter. For context purposes, Elon Musk, the CEO of Twitter, announced earlier this year that the social media giant would be charging users to keep the legacy blue tick that verified accounts are recipients of.
The rule came into force on 4/20, while the date may have made many users question if Musk was actually going to go ahead with this move, he proved that he was not trolling, as iconic celebrities such as former US President Donald Trump, Microsoft Co-Founder Bill Gates, Iconic Indian actors such as Shah Rukh Khan, and Amitabh Bachchan lost their verified blue ticks as soon as the rule came into force.

The blue tick system was started in 2009 to help users verify the legitimacy of celebrities, popular companies, and athletes. It was free until recently. While most popular individuals did lose their verified symbol if they had not subscribed to the service, some prominent celebrities managed to retain their blue tick, and Tom Brady is one of them.

Elon Musk footing the bill for a select group of individuals to retain their verified blue tick

How can that be possible? If Tom Brady has not subscribed to Twitter Blue, how does he get to retain his verified tick? Well, it’s not just TB12, along with the former New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB, NBA superstar LeBron James and author Stephen King were also individuals who were allowed to retain their verified tick mark.
This was surprising for fans as previously, LeBron James had made it crystal clear that he has no intentions of paying $5 to subscribe to Twitter Blue in order to retain his verified blue tick. Earlier last month, Bron had stated, “Welp guess my blue ✔️ will be gone soon cause if you know me I ain’t paying the 5.”
Fans thought the King had gone back on his word after they saw his account retain the verified blue tick. Stephen King was equally perplexed and sent this tweet expressing his confusion.
Turns out, the reason for this is that Elon Musk is footing the bill personally for a select group of individuals who he respects and admires. Some of them are LeBron James, Stephen King, and William Shatner, the Star Trek actor.

It appears that Tom Brady is a part of this group, as well as he remains subscribed to Twitter Blue. The GOAT has not revealed explicitly if he opted to remain subscribed to Twitter Blue. But considering prominent QBs such as Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs lost their verified blue tick mark, Elon probably decided to extend this privilege of paying for a few accounts to Tom Brady.
The new flex for Tom Brady is to be verified on Twitter for free. Add that to his already 10-foot-long resume. With this, there appears to be a new metric to measure success, and to be verified on Twitter without actually paying for it. Guess Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes have a bit of work to do in order to get there.
