The greatest quarterback of all time, Tom Brady, announced on Feb 1 that he is going to retire for a second and final time from football. Fans knew this was coming after Brady delivered his worst season ever with a losing record of 8-9 but it still hurt seeing him bid adieu to the game he conquered.
After Brady retired for the first time, there were many speculations about his return, and fans and analysts were discussing the possible destination of where he might land if he was to come back. Miami Dolphins was one of the names to pop up since they tried to poach him while he was still with the Patriots.
Another team that was in contention was the San Francisco 49ers. Brady grew up in California and watched the 49ers play and did express his wish to play for them. Before signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the 45-year-old did ask San Fran if they would welcome him on board but they refused since Jimmy Garoppolo had just led them to the Super Bowl and decided to bank on him.
Will Tom Brady unretire to play for the 49ers?

With Tom Brady finally hanging up his cleats for good, one would imagine that talks about him coming back would finally be put to rest. Wrong! Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk is still speculating that Brady might renounce his second retirement and that the 49ers is the perfect destination for him. “Now, with Jimmy Garoppolo finally moving on and real questions about Lance and Purdy, why shouldn’t the 49ers make a move for Brady?” Florio said. “Their championship window remains open, even if they’ve been unable to fly through it. Brady could be the missing piece to the first San Francisco Super Bowl victory in 29 years — since the 29th Super Bowl.”
The 49ers’ roster is stacked with elite players on the offense and defense. They just made their third conference championship game in four games which shows that this team has the potential to win the Super Bowl. And if Brady unretires then maybe Rob Gronkowski is also brought back into the fold by San Francisco. Imagine Gronk and Geroge Kittle on the same offense! Defenses wouldn’t know what hit them.
Additionally, both Trey Lance and Brock Purdy are recovering from injuries which makes Brady coming in to quarterback for one year seem plausible. Analyst Mike Silver in conversation with Colin Cowherd on his show said that the 49ers might ask the 7x Super Bowl champion to unretire to play for them. “I think, if you’re the Niners, you ask Brady again. I think you let the dust settle for a while,” Silver said.
“It just makes too much sense now, especially Purdy, with the surgery being pushed back, which, A, is kind of a sign. Like this whole ‘He’s going to be back at six months’ is not written in stone. B, it does push the timeline already very, very close, best case scenario, [to the start of the season].” The justifications given by Mike Silver do make perfect sense but with Brady going through a divorce, there are rumors that he is trying to win back the mother of his children Gisele Bündchen.
If the rumors do hold water, then Tom Brady won’t unretire. Still, the prospect of seeing him play for one more season and lift his 8th Lombardi makes one’s heart do cartwheels. Let’s see if this comes to pass or not!
