The Super Bowl is an important event not just for the players but also for the announcers as well. But for Tony Romo, it will be a test of his football knowledge, considering all the scrutiny the former NFL quarterback has been under recently.

Since breaking out in 2017, Romo’s allure has dimmed a bit over time. On top of that, he has faced criticism from various quarters, which has only increased this season. However, CBS Sports’ chair, Sean McManus, believes the majority of the criticism directed at Romo is “undeserved.”

During a one-on-one interview with Chris “Mad Dog” Russo’s SiriusXM radio show on Thursday afternoon, McManus talked about the wide-stretch criticism of Romo ahead of his Super Bowl LVIII call with Jim Nantz. As a matter of fact, Russo himself is a big critic of the 43-year-old announcer. He asked McManus to talk his way through the situation.

Tony, not your meat and potatoes analyst. He’s more of a fan, and he gets excited. We sometimes say to him, ‘Hey, calm down a little bit because you do get too into the game.
McManus told Russo

In the age of social media, everyone has a platform where they can share their opinion. On most occasions, it’s the negative that gets more limelight than the positive. McManus claimed that viewers enjoy listening to Romo and Tracy Wolfson. However,

When social media starts to turn, it’s mostly negative, and right now they’re all focused on Tony Romo.

McManus defended Tony Romo over the recent criticism

Social media tends to attract the negative more than the positive. But even those who think well of Romo haven’t come out and stood by his side. McManus is among the select few who are sticking up for the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback.

However, when he mentioned that the network had to advise Romo to “calm down during broadcast”, that does justify the criticism. If he doesn’t falter at his job, there wouldn’t be any problem to begin with. For starters, he could rectify not calling Taylor Swift Travis Kelce‘s wife every time the camera shows her. Yet, McManus claimed that Romo is a hard worker.

I think he’s working his rear end off [and to] think the fact that he’s not prepared is not fair.

The veteran analyst had enough as per Awful Announcing following Romo’s Franco Harris reference during the Buffalo Bills vs. Kansas City Chiefs AFC Divisional round game. Romo commented after the Bills fumbled the ball and tight end Dalton Kincaid helped the ball out of bounds. The Bills still kept possession but drew a 10-yard illegal penalty at Kincaid’s expense.
