$20,000,000 worth Travis Kelce admits being underpaid despite his status as one of the greatest TEs in NFL history
Travis Kelce signed a four-year contract extension worth $57.25 million, that is all set to run out till 2025.
Travis Kelce
Travis Kelce is arguably one of the best tight ends in the National Football League. The 33-year-old played a stellar role for the Kansas City Chiefs during their Super Bowl success during the 2022/23 season and is currently on a seven-season streak of more than 1000+ yards, a huge statistic for a tight end.
His importance within the Chiefs setup can be considered second only to quarterback Patrick Mahomes but has not quite translated into him receiving a humongous contract at any point in time. Currently, the tight end earns an average of $14.3 million per year, which seems a big number but is quite mediocre in the context of the current market situation in the NFL.
Over the past couple of years, franchises have been very lenient in handing out massive contracts to not only quarterbacks but to players from all positions. This has inflated the markets massively, and Kelce is aware that his average salary of $14.3 million a year looks meagre in the context of the recently handed-out contract extensions.
Travis Kelce wants to win more championships with the Chiefs rather than receive more money somewhere else
Kelce is somewhat envious of his former teammate, Tyreek Hill who joined the Miami Dolphins last season after a massive trade. The wide receiver pockets a whopping $30 million per season, which is approximately twice what Kelce earns. Despite acknowledging his comparatively weak financial contract, the veteran is happy to stay on at the Chiefs, where he’s won loads of titles.
“When I saw Tyreek go and get 30 [million] a year, in the back of my head, I was like, man, that’s two to three times what I’m making right now,” the 2-time Super Bowl winner said during his interview with Vanity Fair. “I’m like, the free market looks like fun until you go somewhere and you don’t win. I love winning. I love the situation I’m in.”
“You see how much more money you could be making and, yeah, it hits you in the gut a little bit. It makes you think you’re being taken advantage of,” Kelce claimed. “I don’t know if I really pressed the gas if I would get what I’m quote-unquote worth,” he added. “But I know I enjoy coming to that building every single day.”
To put things into perspective, Kelce is only the third highest-paid tight end in the league currently behind the likes of Giants’ Darren Waller and 49ers’ George Kittle. It remains to be seen whether he earns himself a bigger contract when his current one comes to an end in 2025.
