Travis Kelce finally addressed the ongoing OT controversy that cost the San Francisco 49ers the Super Bowl LVIII trophy. Lately, there have been a lot of chatters around the league regarding the Niners’ outrageous mistake at the overtime coin toss as they were absolutely unaware of the new overtime news– giving their opponents the perfect opportunity to turn the game in their favor. 

As leading with 19-16 at the end of the regulation, the 49ers won the coin toss of the overtime which they used to get the ball first, in the direction of head coach Kyle Shanahan. But what others couldn’t see: was the sheer surprise on the Chiefs’ faces.

While talking about the matter, the Kansas City Chiefs star tight end expressed his surprise over the whole incident as he stated the whole point of winning the coin toss is to have the advantage in regards to the ball, but the 49ers simply handed over that advantage to the Chiefs, who didn’t waste a second in utilizing it.

Kelce said while laughing at the whole thing, on the “New Height” podcast’s recent episode:

You win the coin toss, that's what you get. You get the opportunity to have the advantage and they handed it right over to us.

The star tight end added further:

They said we wanted to receive and the ref looked at Fred [Warner] and said 'Are you sure?' And he said yes, I want to receive. I want the ball. I jumped out of my seat and said 'Here we go, let's go boys. They want to receive? We get second possession and know exactly what they want. Defense, hold them. Hold them to three (points). We're going to go down here and win this thing, baby.

Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce celebrate 49ers’ coin toss blunder

In the footage captured by the “NFL the Insider” from the Super Bowl LVIII game after and before the coin toss, the Chiefs’ dynamic duo: Patrick Mahomes and Kelce were seen overjoyed upon the negligence by their opponents when they chose to receive first for the overtime. 

Right after it happened, Mahomes ran toward to sideline and said, “They want the ball! They wanted it!” He was joined by Kelce in his celebration asserting that the Niners want the ball and they want to give them so “they can have it.”

As expected, the Niners couldn’t keep possession of the ball for too long and had to settle for a field goal while the Chiefs, upon getting the ball, led it to a touchdown and successfully defended their Super Bowl crown.
