Did Kyle Shanahan choose wrong? Travis Kelce certainly thinks so. The seasoned tight end was the most recent member of the Kansas City Chiefs team to criticize the San Francisco 49ers coach for his decision to receive the ball during Super Bowl LVIII overtime.

Travis told his brother Jason Kelce in the most recent episode of the New Heights podcast that the 49ers effectively gave the Chiefs their advantage from winning the overtime coin flip. In the end, Kansas City would take it and run, winning the game 25–22 to secure the franchise’s third Super Bowl victory in the previous five years.

Travis said on the podcast:

You win the coin toss, that’s what you get, you get the opportunity to have the advantage, and they handed it right over to us. Not trying to harp on the guy, but … like, they said they wanted to receive, and the ref looked at Fred [Warner] and said, 'Are you sure? Are you sure you want to receive?' And he said, 'Yeah.'

He further continued:

We get second possession. We know exactly what they want. Defense, hold ’em. Just hold ’em to three. We’re going to go down here and win this thing baby.
Travis Kelce added

That is exactly what the Chiefs did.

Since then, Shanahan doubled down on his choice, claiming that he “wanted the ball third,” but the 49ers were never given the opportunity by Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense.

Three people have been detained by police pending further investigation, and it is estimated that 22 people were injured in the shooting, with one woman dying. The 34-year-old athlete expressed his love for Kansas and expressed on social media how devastated he was by the mass shooting.

However, fans were left divided after he was seen posing for pictures and continuing the Super Bowl celebrations, with many calling him out. Pictures of Kelce grinning and holding a bottle of beer while posing for a selfie with two police officers outside a sports bar have gone viral on social media.

Travis has not yet publicly addressed the criticism. Just moments before gunfire broke out, Kansas City Chiefs players had just stepped off a stage at the parade and rally where they had given speeches about winning the Super Bowl. Videos captured by onlookers showed some Chiefs supporters tackling and detaining suspected shooters until law enforcement could arrive.
