Ahead of the Week 18 game, Travis Kelce was just 16 yards away from the 1,000-yard milestone but still decided not to play.

The NFL star tight end couldn’t be seen in the last regular season game of the Kansas City Chiefs against the Los Angeles Chargers, and the reason, if you must ask, wasn’t any health issues.

Travis Kelce enlightened his fans on why he sat out the last hurrah by the team and shared that he had a gut feeling.

Ahead of Week 18, the Chiefs had already secured a playoff berth with a 10-5 season record. If the tight end had played, there were risks for injuries that may have cost him the playoffs.

And he surely didn’t want that, though he could have succeeded in completing the 1,000 receiving yards milestone.

However, that didn’t seem like the right reason for Kelce to play, especially when his chance of playing in the playoffs could have been affected.

In the recent episode of the New Heights podcast, Kelce explained that he didn’t play because of any health issues or the fact that he may get injured.

It didn’t feel right in my gut and it didn’t feel like I should be playing the game that way [by the numbers]. If I can get some rest going into next week, stay off the turf out there in L.A. and just avoid some hits…  I was all for that, to gear up for the playoffs.
Said the Chiefs star tight

When Philadelphia Eagles‘ center and Kelce’s brother, Jason Kelce, asked his brother about his firm decision when he was just 16 yards away from the milestone, the tight end explained that he wasn’t affected by the numbers. What he wants is to take his team to the Super Bowl, just like last season.

Andy Reid applauded his tight end for not being selfish

After the narrow victory of 13-12 in week 18, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was questioned about the absence of his star tight end in the game in the post-game press conference.

The head coach praised Kelce by calling him a “humble guy” as he didn’t care about his numbers.

It wasn’t necessary for the tight end to play that game; that’s why, even though the whole locked room urged him to play, Kelce refused, as he didn’t feel good about that.

[Travis] didn’t want to be selfish or come across as selfish…That’s him. Most guys would’ve gone out and done it, but he said, ‘I’ve got a lot of records and he said this one here, I’m not gonna do it this way.
Reid shared.

As the Chiefs have already secured the playoffs and the AFC West divisional title for eight straight times, they are currently preparing for their playoff game, to be held on Saturday, January 13, against the Miami Dolphins.
