The Trey Lance-San Francisco 49ers break up ended up with Lance getting traded to the Dallas Cowboys. Lance had a rough start to his NFL career in San Fran and now will be a back up Dak Prescott in Dallas. The 49ers drafted Lance in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft and played only 8 games in two years. He was injured most of last season with a broken foot. After a poor preseason Lance was demoted to QB3 and later traded to the Cowboys.
Since the trade, Lance did not talk to the media, until yesterday. In his first interview as a Cowboy, Lance opened up about the trade and his new QB teammate Dak Prescott. Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones traded for Lance without consulting his starting QB and that caused a lot of stir in the media.
“I really tried to not expect anything one way or another, but I can say that when I heard it was the Cowboys, I had a big smile on my face,” Lance told the media on Tuesday. “I’m very excited to be here. … I believe that everything happens for a reason. I believe I’m here for a reason and, regardless of what it is, I’m here to try and find a way to help this team.” He further talked about how Prescott welcomed him with ‘open arms’, “He welcomed me with open arms, this morning was the first time I ran into him. But yeah, I mean, that meant a lot to me. I know this business is crazy.”
With Lance, the Cowboys have one of the best QB rooms in the entire league. Prescott will start as QB1 this season, but will be under pressure with Lance in the building. They will open their season against the New York Giants on September 10.
Trey Lance practices with Dak Prescott for the first time since the trade
After struggling in the preseason with the San Francisco 49ers, Trey Lance was traded to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this month. He was drafted by the 49ers third overall in 2021. After an injury filled stint with the 49ers, he will now play for the Dallas Cowboys.
The Cowboys will start Dak Prescott this season. He will be backed up by Cooper Rush and Lance. Prescott was seen demonstrating some drills to Lance ahead of a practice session. Rush was also a part of this drill.
Prescott will be under pressure this season with the addition of QB as talented as Lance. He had a poor 2022 season and will look to bounce back this year. Lance on the other hand will absorb as much as he can from his veteran QB teammate. The Cowboys will play the New York Giants in week 1.
