The USC Trojans, led by star QB Caleb Williams lost their second game of the season in shocking fashion against the Utah Utes on Saturday. They came into the game on the back of a 28-point loss to Notre Dame last week. Williams had his worst game of the season against them. However, the Trojans were expected to handle their Pac-12 rivals with ease on Saturday. Instead, they lost a heartbreaker in the last moments. The emotions of the game were visible on players’ faces as Trojans’ DL Bear Alexander was seen crying after getting ejected late in the game.

During the final minutes of the fourth quarter, Alexander was ejected from the game for targeting. Targeting penalties are often controversial. This one wasn’t far from it. Alexander made contact with the Utah QB’s head but it was minimal and wasn’t intentional. The refs saw it otherwise and Alexander had to leave the game.

Players aren’t forced to leave the field anymore after ejections for targeting penalties. Alexander, however, was distraught as he was seen sobbing uncontrollably as an assistant coach came to console him. The former Georgia Bulldog was having a terrific game, with seven tackles. He would have loved to be there at the end for his team as USC were leading the game by one point when Alexander went out. The Utes eventually won the game on a field goal.

With this loss, the Trojans are potentially out of playoff contention this season as they slip to 6-2. Williams, however, will look to continue his bid for back-to-back Heisman Trophies as the Trojans will play the California Golden Bears next weekend.

USC Trojans’ head coach Lincoln Riley talks about their loss to Utah

The USC Trojans lost to the Utah Utes on Saturday, making it their second loss in as many weeks. With that defeat, they are pretty much out of playoff contention for this season. Trojans’ HC Lincoln Riley talked about the team’s loss.

Riley said, taking questions with the Utah locker room:

Two tough losses in a row and obviously not how any of us scripted this, but you can't script it. It's college football. It comes down to little things here and there, and we haven't quite played clean enough here in the last couple of weeks to take advantage of it.

USC were one of the favorites to win the championship this season, mainly because of their star QB Caleb Williams. However, the Trojans faltered in the past couple of weeks and are potentially out of playoff contention.
