Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers’ magical run has come to a sad end. The Philadelphia Eagles completely dominated the game as they went 31-7 to win the NFC Championship.
The Eagles were clearly the better team as they dominated the entire 60 minutes of gameplay. Their No.1 ranked offense stayed true to its mark. Jalen Hurts wasn’t that efficient in passing last night with just 15 completions for 121 yards and no touchdowns. The running game helped the Eagles to stay strong in the game with Hurts, Miles Sanders, and Boston Scott rushing for touchdowns in the endzone.
Wide receiver DeVonta Smith had an absolutely amazing one-hand catch that resulted in a touchdown on the opening drive of the Eagles. However, after reviewing the play, Smith didn’t have complete control of the ball as he hit the ground, but Kyle Shanahan didn’t challenge the play giving the Eagles a lead. A lot of things went wrong for the 49ers starting with their quarterback.

It was nothing short of a Greek tragedy as the 49ers’ rising sensation Brock Purdy, a third-string quarterback who led the team to the NFC Championship from Week 13 without a single loss, was injured on the first play of the game. Purdy suffered an elbow injury during the first quarter when Eagles’ linebacker Haason Reddick got his hands on the 49ers quarterback.
Purdy was taken off the field and replaced by fourth-string quarterback Josh Johnson. Mr. Irrelevant was put back under center during the third quarter when Johnson suffered a concussion. It really was a messed up night for the 49ers who were already facing quarterback issues right from the start of the season. Firstly, Trey Lance had a season-ending ankle injury after starting two games. Then Jimmy Garoppolo took over and played until week 13 when he injured his foot against the Miami Dolphins.
While San Francisco was watching the Super Bowl slip away from other hands after Purdy was injured, Jimmy Garoppolo was captured laughing and having the time of his life on the sidelines. During the 2022 offseason, it was reported that Garoppolo was leaving the 49ers, but he stayed on for one year on a $6.5 million fully guaranteed salary. Fans didn’t appreciate Jimmy G and Trey Lance, who joined him, smiling on the sideline when the team was losing and they didn’t show him any mercy on Twitter.
The 49ers will have a tough offseason as they will have to evaluate whom they want as their starting quarterback. Their first-round pick Trey Lance or the last pick, Brock Purdy, who took their 3-4 season and led them to the Super Bowl? It’ll be interesting to see who they name as their starting quarterback for the 2023 season.
