The 2023 NFL draft has started in Kansas City and the first round has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. The Panthers finally found their franchise QB in Bryce Young. The Texans threw a curveball by selecting QB C.J. Stroud instead of a defensive guy. However, everyone was shell-shocked when they exchanged the third overall pick with the Cardinals and selected Will Anderson Jr.
Additionally, the Seahawks also had everyone scratching their head as they selected Illinois CB Devon Witherspoon with their No.5 pick. Fans were confounded as to why the Seahawks selected Witherspoon ahead of Jalen Carter and Tyree Wilson, both of whom are the best defensive linemen in the draft.
The Philadelphia Eagles made the smart choice as they drafted Georgia DT Jalen Carter ninth overall. This made the Eagles’ defense even more formidable and an absolute nightmare. “It’s a lot,” Carter told ESPN after his selection to the defending NFC Champions. “I just want to thank God, thank my mom, thank my family for being out here for me and supporting me. It’s time to work. The Eagles got the best player in the draft, for sure.”

Jalen Carter was involved in a car crash that caused death of two
Jalen Carter was initially supposed to be a top-three pick, but his draft stock slipped drastically after he was charged in a fatal car crash in January. Furthermore, his performance at Georgia’s Pro Day was also subpar which didn’t impress the NFL scouts present.
In January, Jalen Carter was involved in a car crash that killed his teammate offensive lineman Devin Willock and football recruiting analyst for the Bulldogs Chandler LeCroy. Carter pleaded no contest to the misdemeanor charges laid against him.
As reported by CBS News, the 22-year-old was sentenced to 12 months of probation and a fine of $1000 dollars and “perform 80 hours of community service and complete a state-sanctioned driving course.”
Jalen Carter who was with Willock in one vehicle, was said to be in a racing contest with LeCroy driving another car that caused the two to lose control and crash into each other. Carter’s attorney said that the young defensive tackle was not drinking or under the influence of any illegal substance that resulted in the death of two people.
Despite not serving any jail time, fans wanted Carter behind bars because jail time or not, two people were dead and he walked away scot-free. Fans were also not pleased with the Eagles for selecting Carter with the ninth overall pick they received in a swap with the Chicago Bears. Philly was called a criminal-loving franchise and many vowed to not support the defending NFC Champions. Here are a few reactions on Twitter.
Jalen Carter is said to be the best defensive player in the draft keeping aside his behavior off the field. If he is able to reel that in, Carter can become one of the great in the game and terrorize teams for years to come.
