The New York football Giants surprised everyone by going into the U.S. Bank Stadium and defeating the third-seeded Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. This is the Giants’ first playoff victory since 2012 and it will be remembered for a long time by the Giants fans. In addition, the Giants might not have to look for a quarterback this offseason since Daniel Jones has proven himself as someone capable of winning big games for the team.
The former first-round pick had a stellar playoff debut as he threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns against a tricky Minnesota defense. Furthermore, the QB also contributed to the ground game by rushing for 78 yards while averaging 4.6 yards per carry. He had more rushing yards than the Giants’ running back and the former No.2 overall pick Saquon Barkley.
And to everyone’s surprise, the mid-season waiver pickup Isaiah Hodgins showed up in a big way by catching 8 passes for 105 yards and one touchdown while averaging 13.1 yards per reception. The Giants had many memorable moments in this slugfest, but one of their offensive plays caught everyone’s attention. During the second quarter, the Giants were leading by 7 points and faced a 1st and goal from the nine-yard line and Brian Daboll got cute with his playing.
The Giants, when no one expected, went deep into their playbook and pulled off the “Statue of Liberty” trick play and it almost worked. The Giants running back ended up running into his own offensive linemen after gaining 3 yards. The play didn’t work out the way they would’ve wanted, but it was fun and nostalgic to see a New York team pulling off this play.

The Giants pull off the Statue of Liberty
In wake of the Giants pulling off the trick play against the Vikings, one might wonder, what is the statue of liberty trick play? In brief, it is named after how the QB looks while executing the play. When he passes the rock off to his RB on this trick play, he stands with one arm up in the air and one hand back behind him like the actual Statue of Liberty does in New York.
The play goes way back to the 40s and has been used by many professional teams with their unique touch. In the NFL, the Baltimore Colts used this trick play against the Oakland Raiders in the 1970 AFC Championship game.
Most recently, the Boise State Broncos used this play to successfully convert a 2-point attempt in overtime against the Oklahoma Sooners in the 2007 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
Nevertheless, the Giants won their game against the Vikings after Kirk Cousins folded in clutch time. They will now face the No.1 seeded team in the NFC, the Philadelphia Eagles this weekend.
