The San Francisco 49ers remain a legit Super Bowl contender in the NFC even after losing two of their quarterbacks. Since the injury, ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ Brock Purdy took over the signal-calling duties as the 49ers quarterback and hasn’t looked back. During the six games he started in the regular season, he threw for 976 yards and 12 touchdowns while throwing just 3 interceptions.
The Iowa State product has surprised everyone and exceeded the expectations that were on him when he took over the starting QB job. Still, some people doubted how he would do in big games as the rookie quarterback prepared to start in his first playoff game in his NFL career in the wildcard week. The second-seeded Niners went against the 7th-seeded Seattle Seahawks.
The 8-9 Seahawks managed to clinch a playoff berth with some help from the Detroit Lions in week 18. The Seahawks had already lost two games against the Niners this season and were looking to get revenge by eliminating their division rivals from the postseason. However, they weren’t prepared to face the fury of ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ Brock Purdy. The rookie did the impossible by living up to the hype created by his regular-season magic and put up a masterful performance against the Seahawks’ defense.
Purdy threw for 332 yards, accumulated four total touchdowns, and became the first quarterback to win in his playoff debut. Furthermore, the QB created magic in many instances with his elusiveness, which the former Niners QB Jimmy Garoppolo failed to do.
Brock Purdy hailed as a hero
The San Francisco 49ers fans on social media were ecstatic about their rookie quarterback’s NFL playoff debut as the QB finished the game with a 131.5 passer rating. He threw for 3 touchdowns and rushed for one more TD.
The Niners’ star running back Christian McCaffrey ran through Seattle’s defense as the 6th-year running back ran for 119 yards while averaging 7.9 yards per carry. Furthermore, he also caught a touchdown pass from his rookie QB.
In addition to that, the star wideout Deebo Samuel, who was struggling with an injury, had a ‘burst-out’ game as he caught 6 passes for 133 yards and one touchdown while averaging 22.7 yards per reception.
The Seattle offense put up a good fight in the first half and they even had a one-point lead at halftime thanks to an unnecessary penalty by Jimmie Ward. Although they couldn’t hang on to their lead as Brock Purdy and the Niners decimated them in the second half to close the game 43-21 in a dominating fashion.
