The Philadelphia Eagles have started making all the moves during the offseason to strengthen their catching setup ahead of the 2023/24 NFL season. The Eagles tied down quarterback Jalen Hurts with a record-breaking contract recently, and are now reportedly looking to rope in Matt Patricia as their senior defensive coordinator.
Patricia served as the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots last season in what was a surprising choice by veteran head coach Bill Belichick, given the fact that Patricia’s expertise majorly lies in settling up a team’s defense. The experiment did not go to plan for the Patriots, as they ended up having one of the worst seasons offensively, and Patricia will find solace in returning to his comfort zone during his time with the Eagles.
Patricia has also served as the head coach of the Detroit Lions in the past, but didn’t have that great a time with the franchise. His records read 13-29-1, during his two seasons with the Lions from 2018 to 2020, following which he ended up joining the Patriots.

The 48-year-old did a brilliant job with the Patriots from 2012 to 2017, as the team’s defensive coordinator, which also included two Super Bowl titles. However, it seems that the appointment of Matt Patricia has failed to please the Eagles’ fans so far, who have raised several concerns about his credibility. Check out a few reactions from the fans-
To make matters worse, the fans have also not forgotten his troubled relationship with Darius Slay during their time together at the Lions. Slay is now an Eagles man, and it would be interesting to see whether they have left their issues in the past.
“Obviously, his résumé speaks for itself. It gives you a great mind in there that’s done it at the highest level,” head coach Nick Sirianni said while hinting about Patricia’s impending move to the Eagles. “It gives you great ability to bounce ideas off of with the defensive staff, and also gives me another former head coach that I can bounce ideas off of as well with things which I think would be very helpful.”
The Eagles suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the Super Bowl LVII tie against the Kansas City Chiefs and are looking to do everything they can to challenge for the elusive Lombardi Trophy yet again.
