The plot of Kevin Costner‘s 2014 sports drama movie Draft Day is pretty interesting, but most football fans thought that an NFL team general manager would never try something like trading up to the No.1 spot just to trade down again during the Draft day. And now, reports suggest, the Panthers GM, Scott Fitterer, is trying exactly something like that after acquiring the 1st overall pick from the Bears in a blockbuster trade.
The Panthers gave up a lot to move to the No.1 spot from their original No.9 spot. The Carolina-based football team gave up two first-round draft picks, two second-round draft picks, and, more importantly, their number-one wide receiver D.J. Moore to the Bears. The Panthers GM Scott Fitterer slightly overpaid for the first overall pick, but the fans were happy since they thought the team was making some aggressive moves to draft their future franchise QB.
However, now there are several reports suggesting that the team is trying to trade down a few to stock up on draft picks. If they are satisfied with more than one quarterback, the Panthers could very trade down but it’s tough to see that happening. There are only two sure-shot QBs in this draft class and a team doesn’t give up that much to move up on the Draft board if they don’t have a player in their mind.
Social media reacts to the Panthers plotting to trade down in the Draft board
The Panthers’ alleged plan to trade down a few spots just days after acquiring the first overall pick from the Chicago Bears became the main topic of discussion on social media.
Fans did not like Carolina’s alleged plan to move down after giving up a lot, including a cornerstone wide receiver to move up. The Panthers could not move down a lot after giving up a fortune in hopes of roping in a franchise quarterback.
And the Texans, who are currently holding the No.2 draft pick will be comfortable in the position and won’t be looking to move to the No.1 spot. So the Panthers really don’t have a much of a chance to move down on the board.
Nevertheless, the Bears got a nice haul of picks and a true No.1 wideout from the Panthers. With those picks, the Bears could continue rebuilding their franchise with Justin Fields under center and potentially become a contender in the near future.
