The Dan Snyder era is finally coming to an end in Washington. Snyder has agreed to sell the team for a record-breaking $6.05 billion to Wall Street giant Josh Harris, billionaire Mitchell Rales and NBA legend Magic Johnson.
However, the deal is not exclusive and hasn’t been signed yet. Many reports suggest that the Harris-led group is “optimistic” about taking over the Washington Commanders.
Along with the team ownership, the deal also includes the FedEx Field in Maryland and the Ashburn facility in Vancouver. When this deal will be signed, it will be the biggest amount for which a North American sports team has ever been sold, surpassing the Denver Broncos purchased by the Walton-Penner family for $4.65 million.
Dan Snyder to sell the Commanders after over two decades of ownership
The deal will be looked at by league officials in late May. An eight-member finance committee will be set up to look over the papers and give the league the heads-ups where the 31 voters will vote in favor of or against Harris and Co. buying the Commanders.
Under the leadership of Dan Snyder, the Commanders have been sitting at the bottom of the pool. Snyder brought the team back in 1999 and since then the team has a 164-220-2 regular season record and a mere 2-6 record in the playoffs.
The Commanders also had a lot of legal troubles during Dan Snyder’s ownership. The higher executives were accused of sexual misconduct by the women staff of the organization. Back in 2021, a huge scandal about hostile workplace environment broke out and the Commanders faced heavy backlash.
With the team being sold by Dan Snyder, fans are hopeful the Commanders will see a new direction and change of fortune in the coming seasons.
Amazon found Jeff Bezos was also in contention of buying the Commanders. However, Snyder forced the billionaire out because he owns the Washington Post that ran a series of articles about the wrongdoings in the Commanders’ facility and his personal conduct.
