The Minnesota Vikings signed XFL quarterback Jordan Ta’amu. He was the Offensive Player of the Year last season in the XFL. He worked out for the Vikings in June, but there were no signs of the team signing him anytime soon. This is an interesting addition to the Vikings’ roster and social media is buzzing with this news.
Ta’amu led his team, the D.C. Defenders, to the XFL Championship game last season en route to being selected as the league’s best offensive player. The Vikings’ QB depth chart is set with Kirk Cousins as the starting quarterback and Nick Mullens as his backup. They also have rookie Jaren Hall as the third QB. NFL Twitter was buzzing with this news as questions about Cousins’ future were raised.
There was a lot of positive reaction to the signing. Ta’amu has played in the AAF, the USFL, and the XFL. He was a journeyman in the NFL as he was bounced around several NFL practice squads. There is little to no chance he will receive any playing time this season, but a backup QB won’t hurt the Vikings.
In two preseason defeats, the Vikings have used both of their backup quarterbacks. Their next and final preseason matchup will be against the Arizona Cardinals and they might play Ta’amu in that game. The Vikings open the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 10.
Kirk Cousins enters the 2023 season as the 4th-oldest starting quarterback in the NFL

Kirk Cousins, the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback, turned 35 on August 19. Tom Brady‘s retirement earlier this year makes Cousins the fourth-oldest starting quarterback this season. The other three are Aaron Rodgers (39), Matthew Stafford (35, February 2023), and Ryan Tannehill (35, July 2023). Cousins will enter his 12th season this year.
The Vikings qualified for the playoffs twice with Cousins as their starting QB since signing him in 2018 from the Washington Commanders. Cousins has been to four Pro Bowls and has been a consistent feature on the NFL’s Top 100 Players list.
Cousins was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 2012 NFL Draft. He played in D.C. for five years before signing with the Minnesota Vikings. Cousins will be expected to lead the Vikings deep into the playoffs this season after getting knocked out by the New York Giants the previous year.
