“Long history of double standards against women,” Twitter Reacts to Deshaun Watson’s meagre suspension of 6 games despite sexual harassment allegations by 24 women

“Long history of double standards against women,” Twitter Reacts to Deshaun Watson’s meagre suspension of 6 games despite sexual harassment allegations by 24 women

The Deshaun Watson saga is finally over for good. The quarterback will only face a 6-match suspension a judgement which has brought up the age-old question of injustice towards women on the part of the NFL.

Disciplinary officer Sue L.Robinson ruled that while Watson violated the league’s personal conduct policy, the allegations of sexual harassment against him did not fall into the category of violent sexual conduct. This judgement was made on the basis that 24 women accused Watson of sexual harassment during his spell at the Houston Texans.

The NFL recommended that Watson be suspended for the entirety of the 2022 regular and postseason, however, it was not to be much to the disappointment of many fans who brought out the long history of double standards that the NFL has shown towards women.

Deshaun Watson is all set to miss only the first 6 matches of the 2022 season despite being accused of sexual harassment by 24 different women

In contrast to Deshaun Watson’s inadequate suspension, we can even take a look into the suspensions which had been handed out in the past to players, and a pattern is not very difficult to discern. Players were fined very heavily for crimes not related to women, but the same did not apply to scenarios which included injustice against women.

Josh Gordon was suspended for a major part of 6-years for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy while the legend, Tom Brady was also suspended for his role in the Deflategate scandal way back in 2016. Calvin Ridley was suspended indefinitely through at least the conclusion of the 2022 season for betting on games in the previous season, including on his own team.

In comparison to the above-mentioned suspensions, Deshaun Watson’s 6-game ban without a fine appears to be a very insignificant one, given the fact that a whopping 24 women complained against him of sexual harassment. Greg Hardy, who was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend saw his punishment being toned down from 10 games to only 4 games in 2015.

However, the NFL still has a chance of reassuring the fans of their attitude toward women, if they are able to successfully appeal the length of suspension against Watson in the next three days. If the appeal is successful, it would give NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell an opportunity to change the verdict and possibly give out a bigger punishment to the quarterback.
