The Ravens are struggling to get a long-term deal done with Lamar Jackson. Both parties have grown apart and it looks like Jackson will not be the quarterback of the Ravens next season. But even before things got this messy between Jackson and the Ravens, the Baltimore-based franchise reportedly tried to rope in Baker Mayfield as the potential replacement, however, Mayfield rejected that offer and signed with the Buccaneers instead.
In free agency, the newly signed Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield got an offer from the Ravens but declined it. At the time of the offer, Mayfield was looking for a starting QB job and was under the impression that the Ravens might be signing him to be the backup QB. Nevertheless, Mayfield eventually ended up signing with the Buccaneers and will be competing with their former second-round pick Kyle Trask for the starting quarterback job.
On the other side, the Ravens currently have only one quarterback, Anthony Brown under contract for the 2023 season. Their star QB Lamar Jackson is placed under the non-exclusive free agent and is currently exploring his options in free agency. Their second-string quarterback Tyler Huntley is an unrestricted free agent but hasn’t received any offers yet.
Mayfield might’ve been plan B for the Ravens. But now they don’t have any option left since all the other decent QBs in free agency marker have already signed with other teams. Now, they either have to work a deal out with Lamar Jackson or find a new franchise QB in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.
Social media reacts to the Ravens’ attempt at signing Baker Mayfield
The Baltimore Ravens‘ failed attempt at signing the former first-overall pick Baker Mayfield to replace Lamar Jackson did not sit well with the fans on social media. Some fans believe that the Ravens are disrespecting Jackson by attempting to sign another QB while still negotiating a contract extension with their franchise signal-caller.
Mayfield has been playing in the league since 2018. He spent his first 4-years with the Cleveland Browns and led them to a first playoff victory since 1995 but the Browns eventually moved on from him and signed Deshaun Watson as his replacement.
The Browns traded Mayfield to the Panthers in the 2022 off-season, where he started in six games before he was released. And now, after a brief stint with the LA Rams in the latter half of the 2022 season, Mayfield has signed a one-year deal worth up to 4.5 million dollars. He will now attempt to revive his career in Tampa where he will have a great supporting cast around him.
